Kyuuketsuki means "blood-sucker"; although, kyuuketsuki are very different from the common conception of vampires that are heard about in popular Japanese movies, animations and comic books. Most would think that a kyuuketsuki was a vampire if they caught them in the act of feeding but little do they know that Kyuuketsuki ARE human beings; now, there are some kyuuketsuki who like to think that they are very different from human beings, using the excuse of being a kyuuketsuki to distance themselves from the human race. But even though, there are many differences that they have with regular people, kyuuketsuki aren’t like vampires— they die when other people die, they can be killed like any other human being, they cannot live forever and they aren’t that invincible; just like “normal” human beings.
There isn't much that can distinguish kyuuketsuki from other human beings, but there are occasional mutations which give them cat-ears or an interesting physical characteristics due to the gene but on Yuugiri Island, these characteristics may be unusual but aren't fussed about too much (this is anime, c’mon people).
There is no ability to become a kyuuketsuki; they are born as blood-suckers. An individual doesn't need a gene in their family history which will allow them to become one; it's determined entirely by fate, a role that they are assigned to even before they were born. So it's normal for a kyuuketsuki to have parents who aren’t kyuuketsuki or blood servants or affiliated with them in any way. But it is common sense for most kyuuketsuki to keep their secret from most people, even friends and family, because this blood dealing is a rather strange and complex concept for those that do not understand it.
Kyuuketsuki can only drink blood from one person; this person, their blood servant, is with the kyuuketsuki for life and they are bound together by fate. There are some cases of where kyuuketsuki would drink the blood of people other than their partner but it's extremely rare and not taken very lightly by other kyuuketsuki or the organization, Stardust Nine which would take care of the matter as quickly as possible.
Unlike normal humans, kyuuketsuki have the following abilities:
• They have heightened strength, speed, agility, sight, senses, hearing, etc. than most humans.
• They have some magical ability to manipulate words into spells.
• Retractable fangs
• Faster healing
• They do not need to eat regular food but can, though it doesn't nourish them as well as blood does.
• Have telepathic abilities to sense other kyuuketsuki.
Blood servants usually get these abilities as well (except for blood-sucking) but usually not as strong or powerful as a kyuuketsuki and for them, their ability are rather limiting. But because they supply the kyuuketsuki with the blood which they need in order to survive, the kyuuketsuki will protect them.
Remember, kyuuketsuki are not their own race, they aren't vampires. This is a common misconception, they, like blood servants, are human.
